How to do an SEO audit for your website and how to explore the audit report

Steps to do an SEO audit of your website for free and how to go about exploring the recommendations and finding the criteria that is affecting your web ranking in search engine results.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) audit is the process of assessing a website’s performance against criteria that affect its ranking in search engine results. An SEO audit can be used to analyze a website’s content and structure, research keywords, track competitor activity, evaluate links, and identify any potential technical issues that would inhibit a website’s visibility. By conducting an SEO audit, businesses can ensure their websites are properly optimized to increase visitors and build brand recognition. An SEO audit also provides insight into how well a business is doing in terms of search engine marketing tactics. Ultimately, an SEO audit helps businesses understand how to optimize their website to improve its ranking on search engine results pages and reach more customers.

Things required before you start:

  • You should have an existing business website for which you want to perform the SEO audit.

Steps to do an SEO audit and exploring the recommendations

Step 1: Go to https://neilpatel.com/seo-analyzer/

Click on Sign In.

PS: Ubersuggest (by Neil Patel) is a paid SEO tool but it provides a 7-day free trial for any new account created. So, you can easily use the comprehensive SEO audit feature to the fullest for the first 7 days and which is normally enough for the initial SEO audit of your website.

Step 2: Once you are on the next screen, click on “Register here” at the bottom of the screen to proceed.

Step 3: Once on the next screen you can either create your profile with an email id password combination or if you are using it via Chrome browser then you can simply use the “Continue with Google” button to proceed.

For this example, we will use the “Continue with Google” button.


On the next screen, select the google account you want to use to create the account on Ubersuggest and give the necessary permissions by clicking on “Continue” button on the next step.

Step 4: On the next screen, click on the close button at the top right corner as we will be skipping the project creation step for this seo audit guide.

Step 5: On the next screen, click on “SEO Audit” from the left menu panel to proceed.

Step 6: On the next screen, type in or paste the website URL for which you want to perform the SEO Audit.

Depending on the size of your website the audit process will take some time. Once it’s done, you will be taken to a screen like below:

Step 7: Scroll down to see an important segment in the report, i.e. the page loading speeds.

Step 8: Scroll above to the SEO Issues segment and click on the link “See all SEO issues”.

You can then navigate the issues across the tabs at the top. Each page will be grouped into the common issue headers and they will be displayed with the corresponding Difficulty and SEO Impact levels.

As can be understood, the ones with High SEO Impact need to be tackled first, and the ones with easy difficulty need to be taken up as soon as possible.

Step 9: Click on the View Details link next to one of the Issue header.

Step 10: Now on the next screen you will need to activate your free trial to get access to the full report.

For that, click on the “7-day Free Trial” button to continue.

Step 11: On the next screen, select the plan you want to choose for now to activate the trial.

And click on “Start My Free Trial”.

Step 12: On the next screen, you will be asked to provide the credit/debit card details on which you want to bill the account.

You can fill in the details accordingly and then click on “Start My Free Trial” button to proceed.

You might be charged a refundable amount of $1 as a validation step for your credit card. Don’t worry; as mentioned, this will be credited back to your account within seven days.

Once done, you will be taken to the success message screen. Click on the close button there to continue.

Your SEO audit might have again started on the next screen. This happens mainly because your website might have more than 150 pages or the process was not completed before.

If you see the SEO audit in progress screen, please wait for some time for it to finish and traverse to the SEO Issues screen (Step 8).

Step 13: Now click on the “View Details” link next to an issue segment and explore the pages having this issue.

Once clicked you will be taken to the screen where you can view the list of pages having this issue.

Now click on the link “What is this and how do I fix it” at the top of the page next to the issue name.

Once you do that, you will see a pop-up with the details about what needs to be done from your end and why this is important.

Let’s explore a few common issues that are found on most websites:

  • Missing titles and meta description tags: Creating meta information can help search engines determine what topics your pages cover, making them easier to find. Make sure your website code has the necessary <H1> header tags and <meta> tags for each page with the relevant data. Remember that there should be only one <h1> header tag on a page. Rest of the header tags can be repeated.
  • Duplicate titles and description tags: Always make sure that your meta information and page titles are unique and are not similar to other pages, as this throws off the search engine bot from ranking the pages with duplicate meta or title tags.
  • Duplicate content: To fix this problem, make sure to create unique content for each page on your site.
  • Slow page loading times: This can be fixed by optimizing images (using tools or plugins to reduce image sizes or uploading images in formats like WebP) and scripts, as well as caching pages or using a CDN.
  • Not mobile-friendly: Ensure the website is optimized for mobile devices by testing the design and performance on different devices.
  • Broken links: Track any external links on your site and look for broken ones that need fixing periodically.
  • Unoptimized images: Make sure to optimize your images by resizing, compressing and using the right file type. Images that are of large size (>1mb) can slow down the website, thereby causing a negative influence on your search rankings.
  • Lack of internal linking: Linking related pages together internally can help users navigate easily around your site while improving its structure for search engines.
  • Poorly structured site hierarchy: Establish a well-structured hierarchy or page structure early on and make sure it’s easy for visitors to find important information quickly.
  • Irrelevant or missing anchor text: Anchor text links should use descriptive words so that both users and search engines can quickly understand the context.

Important: Once you have noted down the SEO issues and have understood the ways to fix it or already fixed it then make sure to cancel the Ubersuggest subscription before 7 days to avoid being charged for the tool unknowingly. If you want to continue using the tool then you don’t need to cancel it.
